Before you buy
A five-minute checklist for any small appliance
Most buyer's regret comes down to size, cleaning and how often you will really use it. Run through these first.
- Measure your space. Check width, depth and height, plus the room the door or lid needs to open.
- Match the size to your household. One or two people rarely need the largest capacity.
- Check how it cleans. Look for removable parts and ask whether they are dishwasher-safe.
- Think about storage. If it will live in a cupboard, check that it fits there and is easy to lift.
- Read the warranty and return policy. Know what happens if it does not suit your kitchen.

Quick answers
Which small appliance is best for cooking for one or two?
There isn't one best appliance. For one or two people, a compact air fryer or air fryer toaster oven covers the most everyday cooking, such as reheating, roasting and crisping. A rice cooker helps if you eat rice often, and a blender suits smoothies and soups. Choose by what you cook most and how much counter space you have.
What is the difference between an air fryer and a toaster oven?
An air fryer is a compact countertop appliance that moves hot air with a strong fan, usually around food in a basket. A toaster oven has racks and heating elements and is used to toast, bake and broil. Many combination models do both, so compare size, controls and cleaning before you choose.
How much counter space does a small appliance need?
Measure the width, depth and height of the spot, then check the product's dimensions. Leave the clearance the manufacturer's manual recommends around vents, and make sure the door, lid or basket can open fully.
Do you test the products you recommend?
We label every guide as hands-on or research-based. If we have not tested a product ourselves, we say so and explain that the guide relies on specifications and reviews. We never claim testing that did not happen.
